戴夫（马修·莫迪恩 Matthew Modine 饰）、维克（兰迪·奎德 Randy Quaid 饰）和东尼（保罗·雷瑟 Paul Reiser 饰）是相处多年的好友，如今，他们又纷纷沦为拖家带口的单亲老爸，友谊的坚固自然不必多说。做单亲爸爸不易，他们每一个人都或多或少的面临着让他们感到头痛的难解问题。 某个平凡的周末来临之时，三个死党做出了一个不平凡的决定——彼此交换他们的孩子，希望这样的方法能够改善家庭氛围。然而，连自己孩子都搞不定的三个男人，又怎么可能搞得定“别人家的孩子”呢？一连串的麻烦和笑料就此发生，但在此过程中，戴夫、维克、东尼和他们的孩子们再一次体会到了亲情的重要与珍贵。
