培尔是犹太妇产科医生，二战时被德国人抓到集中营，帮助纳粹医生做事，战后，却被控告帮助纳粹迫害犹太人，而认为有罪。从奥斯威辛集中营逃出的盖丝拉．培尔医生，来到了美国，希望重新执业，行医救人。但她申请美国公民权时，却因为道德问题而遭到质疑，必须接受委员会的质问，勾起她许多的伤心往事。盖丝拉在纳粹压迫下，失去了父母、丈夫跟孩子；在集中营里，盖丝拉原本就是妇产科医生，为了求生存，也为了保护集中营的妇女，她被迫进行堕胎手术，做了许多她不愿意做的事，也因此深感愧疚与无奈…与法律周旋多次，她总算取得公民权，在纽约行医，命运的安排，她遇上了家乡旧识，弥补了当年的遗憾。
