因为家中长辈逼迫着要其做年轻寡妇段喜凤（吕丽萍）家的倒插门女婿，老井村青年孙旺泉（张艺谋）有心与高考落榜后回村务农的恋人赵巧英（梁玉瑾）离家出走，却因父亲被炸死在井下一事不得不将计划搁浅，听命做了段喜凤的丈夫。此后，孙旺泉把全部精力放在了打井上，终用科学方法测定了老井村第一口井的井位。 全村人日夜为打井奋战时，突发塌方事故，赵巧英和孙旺泉被土石封在了井下。在生命可能就此失去之际，两人按捺不住做了一次夫妻，然而，他们被人救了出来。
