1966年出版的连载小说《末班车来的客人》在当时颇受年轻人欢迎。作者洪胜源虽然将该作定位为通俗小说，然而身患绝症的主人公内心的绝望感以及周围人物之间的纠葛及彷徨，使得该小说成为一部水准较高的作品。六十年代拍摄了多部佳作的俞贤慕导演出于对这部小说的喜爱，将其搬上了荧幕。俞贤慕邀请了当时极具人气的女演员文姬担当女主角。男主人公则由李顺才扮演，他在该作品中展现了极高的演技。对于生命及死亡根源的真诚反省，使得俞贤穆导演的该作品极具分量。古典的摄影、演员们杰出的演技、坚实的剧本以及俞贤穆导演所擅长的现实主义手法很好地表现了该影片。同时导演利用彩色宽银幕画面给观众视觉享受。通过对画面、道具、美术的运用表现了主人公的心里状态、暗喻以及电影的象征意义。60年代的人气女星文姬和南贞妊也于该片进行了演技大比拼。（编译：mary@aerohut）。
