故事发生在非洲原始部落之中，虽然现代文明已经占领了这个地球上的大部分地方，但是这个以母系社会为主的部落依然在种种的机缘巧合之下被完美的保留了下来。少妇欧卡诺罗（Saly Badji 饰）嫁给了一个非常懒惰的男人，因为受不了总想着不劳而获的丈夫，欧卡诺罗决定和丈夫离婚，这在这个部落中并不算什么新鲜事了。 之后，欧卡诺罗邂逅了名为耶尔（Alpha Sane 饰）的男子，两人很快就走到了一起。可是，婚后的生活并没有耶尔想象中的那么美满，在无休止的矛盾和争吵之中，耶尔决定出走，一路上，耶尔见识到了文明社会的运作规则，亦发现了原始生活方式的种种弊端与缺陷。
