本片根据真实事件改编，是以关注底层生活而著称的肯•洛奇又一部社会写实作品。单身母亲玛吉（Crissy Rock 饰），不堪忍受相似的家庭暴力，先后离开了四个男人，而艰辛地养育他们遗留下来的孩子。一次，因为母亲的疏忽，单独留在家中的孩子们在火灾中受伤。社区机构经过调查，认定玛吉是一个“不合格”的母亲，而判定四个孩子改由社区负责安排照顾。期间，愤怒的玛吉遇上了一位爱慕她的巴拉圭外籍男子，两人憧憬着重建一个幸福的家庭。于是，为了孩子们的抚养权，他们一起与社区的管理人员进行交涉与斗争•••••• 母亲玛吉的扮演者 Crissy Rock 凭借此片的精湛演出，荣获当年柏林电影节最佳女演员奖。
