Plot Summary:Nina Simone is a legendary musical icon and was a fearless advocate of civil rights. The versatile stamp of her uniquely distinctive voice and the genre-fluid force of her artistry make her work always fresh, always startling and always relevant.\n\nFrom revolutionary anthems like Mississippi Goddamn to the euphoric scat of Feeling Good, she inhabits and expresses the absurdity of the human condition, leaving an indelible imprint on listeners new and old.\n\nAbsurde opens as Nina and her cast are preparing to rehearse her own new work, A Colored Ballet. In this show-within-a- show, she aims to honour her duty as an artist to reflect her times; but her stage, like life, is full of pre-production busyness and distraction. Preparations for the rehearsal are interrupted by complaints from the actors, frustrated by an endless series of drastic changes to the choreography and score. With characteristic irreverence, Nina takes control and the rehearsal begins.\n\nIn the first act, The Ties That Bind, begins as Eunice Waymon becomes Nina Simone and aspires to a career as a classical pianist In Certain, she tries to free herself from the oppressions of family and religion, and from the racist and sexist prejudices of the time. With I Put A Spell on You, she attempts to move on from her struggles with family and personal relationships - but finds that the price of this is rejection and isolation. Her classical ambitions thwarted when she is refused a place at the Curtis Institute, Nina earns a living by playing in a juke joint, and then, with Young, Gifted and Black, she finds purpose in working for civil rights.\n\nIn Act Two, End of the Line, we see Nina's musical progression from her deep love of Bach and the classical tradition to a passionate engagement with popular music. The two combine in extraordinary ways to produce an irresistibly joyful synthesis of music and song. We also witness in this act her internal journey - through Four Women, Genius and Looking and I Loves You Porgy - as she strives to resolve the conflicts in her identity. Though she leaves America and its limitations to achieve this, by the end of the act she realises that the answer lies within. Through the death of her human father, Nina accepts the Divine Father who was always there for her, waiting. Now she is Finally Free and, through her rich legacy of recordings, today's audiences can experience and be inspired by her creative energy, her joyful exuberance and her unflinching devotion to her art.
